I host a podcast called The Balance and wrote a book titled Balance with BlendedLearning because I see teachers struggling with balance in every coaching and training session I facilitate. The person doing the work in a classroom is the person doing the learning. That belief has informed the way I define blendedlearning.
When I facilitate blendedlearning workshops, I ask participants to think about these three roles and identify the role they spend the most time and energy in. Blendedlearning can help! So how do we leverage blendedlearning to be more strategic about the form instruction takes in classrooms?
4 – UDL – Universal Design for Learning Inaccessibility is still a major downfall of some online learning implementations. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) ensures that lessons are accessible for every student. UDL is an excellent framework that can be used in any classroom.

In my last blog post titled “ Part I: Maximize the Impact of Explicit Teaching with BlendedLearning ,” I explored the benefits of shifting from explicit teaching as a whole class experience to a differentiated small group experience.
Strategy #1: Two Teacher Led-Stations – One Differentiated, One Uniform Structure: In this co-teaching model, two teacher-led stations are set up, each focusing on a distinct learning task. Teacher 1: Provides targeted instruction tailored to each group’s needs, abilities, and skill levels.
Skillset Shift To achieve this shift from whole group to small group, teachers need flexible instructional models that position students at the center of the learning experience. Shifting From Whole Group to Differentiated Small Group Instruction The primary advantage of the station rotation model in math lies in its structure, which offers teachers dedicated time with small groups. That allows the teacher to provide differentiatedinstruction, modeling sessions, and support.
Teachers may want to pull individual students or small groups for personalized or differentiatedinstruction and support. Carol Ann Tomlinson, a guru in differentiation, defines this component for us: “…at its core, differentiatedinstruction means addressing ways in which students vary as learners.” Choice boards are one way to meet kids where they are as learners, as well as, give them ownership in their learning.
