Blended learning is something that is near and dear to my heart. As I transitioned from the principalship to supporting districts and schools, I learned that blended learning was a powerful pedagogical strategy that could unleash students' potential while meeting their diverse needs.

In the early days of my transition to blended learning, I had one Chromebook, which I received after writing a Donor’s Choose project. It is a series of stations, or learning activities, that students rotate through. To be considered a blended learning model, at least one station must be an online learning station.

Even though this schedule has students on campus attending class four of five days each week, it is unlikely that secondary students could take the same number of courses on this schedule. Schools may need to get creative when it comes to their course catalog. Leadership must build this time into the teachers’ workday.

The other day I was conducting some learning walks with the administrative team at Wells Elementary School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD). Throughout the school year, I have been assisting them with digital pedagogy as it relates to blended learning and the use of flex spaces.

In my most recent book, Balance with Blended Learning , I have a chapter dedicated to providing real-time feedback as students work. I encourage teachers to use blended learning models to create time and space in the classroom to give feedback on their students’ work as they work.
