One thing that I’ve been thrilled about is that technology and online learning have really supported these students to continue their education, even though the pandemic disrupted many systems and processes. As schools and universities reopen their gates, there’s great hope that there will soon be more in-person learning.
Mastery learning (also called competency-basedlearning) is being used in some classes and schools. Principal Chris Huckans believes that competency-based education (CBE) is one of the keys to the school’s success. Huckans says that Bishop Hall’s use of the Brightspace learning management system provides students with highly personalized learning pathways, which “allow them to innovate and experiment.”
Let’s start with what personalized learning is — or should be — and go from there. Indeed, the concept has been conflated with other educational and instructional approaches that integrate technology : adaptive learning, blended learning , competency-basedlearning and differentiated learning, to name just a few.

When I landed in New Hampshire, I was eager to see competency-based education in action at the secondary level. That’s what competency-based education is about – giving students a voice in how they show what they’ve learned. This is one thing the schools in New Hampshire appear to do well.

When we decided that we’d be giving our sixth-grade students control over their own learning this year, our colleagues told us we were crazy. People are quite comfortable picking the first of the five parts—students advance upon demonstrated mastery—and focusing on pace rather than helping every student successfully learn.
