In the afternoon they might be given a math or science assignment where they have to document the results. They then may move on to reading a poem and answering questions.

In one segment, they presented a unit that might be encountered in an 8th grade Health class (I''ve seen it, though not as intense as in this example) in which students needed to engage in tasks such as documenting a nutrition diary. I think the idea of pairing picture books and apps is one of my favorites to explore.

Last year I outlined the helpful features obtained by signing up for Read and Write for Google , a toolbar accessible in Chrome that brings to webpages and documents (particularly Google Docs) text to speech (always free) and text prediction, dictionary, and other features (via premium account or teacher subscription after 30 days).
