The fact remains that there was no professional learning to prepare for the reality that everyone is facing nor a plan for something like COVID19. I always like to focus on the small wins when I am facilitating professional learning with schools and districts. My favorites are Mentimeter and Padlet.

One of the best parts about job-embedded, on-going work with school districts is facilitating a variety of professional learning opportunities. Recently the district asked me to be a part of their professional development day, which consisted of seven different learning strands specific to the needs and interests of their teachers.

This includes digital pedagogy that consists of purposeful use, a move to personalized learning through blended strategies, use of data to differentiate, innovative assessment, and performance tasks. Many have realized how vital they were to continuity in learning, whether it was remote or hybrid.

Learning Management System (LMS) The consistent use of an LMS such as Google Classroom, Schoology, or Canvas works to create a more equitable virtual environment for all kids and families. It can become the hub for all lessons, videos, activities, assessments, student work, and SEL check-ins using Google or Canvas forms.

The newest addition comes courtesy of Schoology, a K-12 learning management system provider that PowerSchool announced it was buying last month. Neither Gulati nor Schoology CEO Jeremy Friedman commented on the transaction amount. Today, the headcount has ballooned six-fold, thanks to a steady stream of acquisitions.

Since pacing is a pivotal component of both personalized and blended learning, I did another Google search for ways to integrate timers into Google Slides. The key with a choice board to use as a part of professional learning with adults or classroom learning with students is sound blended pedagogy.

Educators now shoulder the burden to create lessons and activities that will enable students to learn at home. Virtually none have received extensive professional learning in this area. That is a good start, but not a solution if learning is the goal. So, what does this all mean?
