There has been a fair amount of criticism leveraged against “paint-by-numbers” types of STEM and maker kits. The basic and foundational skills need to be there in order for the makers to go in directions that are new and creative for them. . This criticism revolves around the stifling of the creativity of learners.

We saw some movement in the 80’s and 90’s around portfolio development, around performance assessment, and other sorts of indicators of authentic work. I would say that jams are kind of “messy,” so if I was assessing a jam, I wouldn’t assess on neatness. Tom: So, the entire jam you can do as a PDF. So you can do it that way, and then once you have that you can submit that as an assignment. You get messy. You just do. It’s part of the process.
If you assess along the way, in this way, on your feet, by the time kids turn in those final copies, the quality is that much better because you provided bits of feedback along the way. #4: Assess on your feet, not at midnight on your weekend. How are you going to have them write on their feet and you assess on your feet?
