Even though kids had iPads, parents were not sure [how to use them for class]. In many cases, parent involvement understandably extends to supporting students in taking online assessments. For many adults, assessment was for your grade [when they were in school]. We sent cheat sheets to parents. Now it drives instruction.

There were no iPads, no online assessments and no Zoom. They appreciated this flexibility, but it also meant that preservice teachers like Tonja would need to apply everything they learned about teaching to two very different modalities: in-person and online. Having online learners added new challenges.

I polled my PLN to find specific tech areas students needed help with in preparing for the Assessments. Pay attention to these and your students will be much more prepared for this Spring’s Common Core assessments: Keyboarding. It won’t surprise any adult when I say using an iPad isn’t the same as using a computer.

People have noticed that I’m strengthening relationships with my students, I’ve designed a curriculum that’s engaging for the toughest kids, and I’m using the iPads I found in a corner. I found out we had a cart full of 40 iPads in a closet purchased with school improvement money. So I took the iPads while no one was looking.
