STEM Idea #1: Teach with Passion. And I think that sometimes as adults, especially when we start talking about STEM or STEAM or whatever buzzword it is that your school uses, we muddy the learning. Since math classes progress in a mostly linear way, students have to get fractions to set them up for algebra; and how they do in algebra will likely influence whether they even get to try for advanced courses like calculus, a traditional weed-out metric for lucrative science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. isn’t working.
Think back to an assessment you took in your elementary years. The assessments you took were not that memorable; you probably didn’t have a lasting connection and there was absolutely no impact on you as a learner whatsoever. So why can’t we do that in a class that [only] allows for traditional assessments? Let’s embrace that!
It can also be used as a quick and dirty assessment tool, as the conversations generally reflect a level of understanding the teacher can use gauge mastery and plan further instruction. We saw some movement in the 80’s and 90’s around portfolio development, around performance assessment, and other sorts of indicators of authentic work. One of the more interesting initiatives that we’re seeing is coming out of New York, a consortium of schools called the New York Performance Assessment Consortium. Scott: Right.
