I used traditional grading practices, assessing student progress through quizzes, tests, project, midterms and finals each year. I was confident that students were learning and their grades supported that. Abandoning traditional units and chapters and coming up with new potential segments of learning was a strenuous process.
What type of performance-based formative and summative assessment took place? A learning management system can have a tendency to promote a “surface” type of assessment. Teachers must be intentional at exploring ways online to ensure that assessment is formative and allows them to plan scaffolding for next steps in learning.
Looking at active learning strategies, examples encompass a range of techniques designed to engage students in the learning process, promoting deeper understanding and retention of material. This promotes metacognition and self-regulated learning skills. This encourages active engagement, critical thinking, and discussion.

During the second semester of the program, each student takes a seminar structured around a major research project, sometimes with one of the same professors, sometimes not.
