We don’t know for sure what education will look like in the future, but one thing is for sure, and that is the need to adapt and evolve. The pandemic shuttered schools across the globe, and lessons, some of which were very hard, were learned. The lessons learned during COVID19 provide opportunities to re-envision what schools can be.
With little to no training or preparation, they have stepped up to keep learning going. What barriers make designing for deeper learning in schools challenging? In today’s rapidly changing educational landscape, educators face numerous challenges when designing instruction that promotes deeper learning for all students. How can teachers weave social-emotional learning (SEL) skills into the fabric of their lessons?
Blendedlearning is something that is near and dear to my heart. As I transitioned from the principalship to supporting districts and schools, I learned that blendedlearning was a powerful pedagogical strategy that could unleash students' potential while meeting their diverse needs.
For the better part of a decade, many schools have been implementing blendedlearning models that integrate online learning with brick-and-mortar instruction to rethink time, space and staffing. Which learning activities are most important to do together?
From a school standpoint, the key to equity is the learning experience that is created for students. There is a great deal of research and evidence out there that tells us people learn differently, and eventually, success relies on a vast spectrum of strategies. Think about your own learning and what you need.
But I think all of the virtual schools that I’ve encountered still focus primarily on low-level learning, digitized and chunked into a digital adaptivelearning system. I don’t think I’ve ever seen ‘deeper learning’ or inquiry- and project-based learning as a core tenet of a virtual school.
In an effort to personalize learning more and more educators are turning to blendedlearning strategies. When it comes to personalized learning , the “personal” should be emphasized. Putting all kids in front of a device and having them engaged in an adaptivelearning tool all at the same time is not personalized.
For many, this was desperately needed as the distractions and challenges at home impacted their learning. Develop pedagogically-sound blendedlearning through either choice boards or playlists. Leverage any adaptivelearning tools that have been purchased. They wanted and needed their teachers.
Let’s start with what personalized learning is — or should be — and go from there. Indeed, the concept has been conflated with other educational and instructional approaches that integrate technology : adaptivelearning, blended learning , competency-based learning and differentiated learning, to name just a few.
This unprecedented situation calls for a flexible hybrid learning approach to minimize further disruption and ensure that high-quality teaching and learning can continue. 3 Ways in which edtech enables hybrid learning.
