Talent Development Secondary, a nonprofit that grew out of a Johns Hopkins University study on dropout rates, is the data-driven arm of the Diplomas Now model; it identifies kids at risk of dropping out and establishes a schoolwide process of intervention and support services to keep them on track to graduate.

Yet research tells us that exposure to a Black teacher in elementary school can reduce the high school dropout rate for low-income Black male students by 39 percent. They pay educator preparation programs for course credits earned by their free labor as student teachers. Just seven percent of our country’s teachers are Black.

Like many alternative schools, The Charter School of San Diego allows students behind on credits to complete courses online at an accelerated pace. Some students reported finishing a course in two weeks.
