Because they are on-demand, micro-credentials also enable educators to continue their professionallearning from home during periods like COVID-19 school closures and summer break.
The Edcamp Community supports educators to organize and participate in participant-driven professionallearning designed by and for educators. However, with educators pivoting to distance learning, organizers have developed virtual Edcamps to continue creating opportunities for voice and choice in their professionallearning.

So, in this article, I’m going to share my thoughts and experience about the technologies and solutions that reshape the educational industry and the way we learn in 2020 and beyond. With 2020 in the rearview mirror, it is now time to focus on the present with an eye to the future. Many difficult lessons were learned during the pandemic, and a few more are sure to materialize over the next couple of months. As the new year begins, schools, for the most part, are still where they were in 2020.
Long gone are the days where the overhead projector reigned supreme in the classroom. In many cases, every classroom is outfitted, as well as conference rooms and professionallearning spaces. I shared my story about how both the overhead projector and television were used to support how I taught, not how my kids learned.
“I felt I had a system that worked, and introducing this ‘nonsense’ wouldn’t add anything to my classroom and would only create more work for me and be a distraction for my students,” she said. She had her students put their devices away when they entered her classroom and continued teaching the same way she had for the last two decades.
Therein lies what separates effective vs. ineffective professionallearning. In a nutshell, she had replicated her real classroom in terms of how it looked and felt before the pandemic into a vibrant virtual environment. As I immersed myself in the experience, it was like I was in the classroom myself.
Namely, this was the first formal introduction of competency-based professionallearning through micro-credentials in Puerto Rico. Our new case study report highlights the effectiveness and impact of professionallearning support for technology integration and use, including competency-based micro-credentials, for educators.
At the beginning of 2020, no one could have foreseen the impact of the pandemic.
