The Edublog Awards were started about 7 years ago to counteract the trend of blocking socialmedia in school districts and celebrate the educational power of these resources. Obviously socialmedia has been transformative for me and my practice and I wanted to participate for that reason again this year.
We held the first Edcamp in Philadelphia in May, 2010. We used socialmedia to send out the word. The educators who had connected through socialmedia now had a chance to meet face-to-face and enhance the relationships that they had already started. Each Edcamp is organized by educators, for educators.
A PLN isn't just composed of people you interact with online, but online communities and socialmedia platforms allow for an infinite number of possibilities and combinations depending on your interests. The members of this group can constantly be in flux because you choose whom you want to interact with or reach out to.
I use socialmedia to share the things I've learned via blogs to help others, I've asked people to join me at educational events like Edcamp Gig City and CoffeeEDU, I've asked people to support me in my JDRF walks to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, and more recently I've reached out to an entire city to help me find my lost dog.
A long time friend of mine, Beth Still , had sat down in the session (although it was not necessary for her to be there as she could have easily led the session), as I shared some ideas for empowering use of socialmedia for both teachers and students.
