Students are expected to have learned to read by age 9, which corresponds to third or fourth grade in elementary school. This chart shows that young Black students progressed in reading for four decades, from 1971 to 2012, when the scores of Black children peaked. Between 2012 and 2023, 40 years of progress in math vanished.
